Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides low-cost health insurance to children up to age 19. CHIP is available to families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but who can't afford to buy health insurance. In some states, CHIP may also be available for pregnant women.

CHIP covers many health care services, including:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Dental care
  • Eye care
  • Mental health and substance abuse services

Preventive care services are free. They include:

  • Well-child exams
  • Immunizations
  • Hearing, dental, and vision screenings
